Editado originalmente em 1960, Out There foi o segundo álbum de Eric Dolphy depois do seu tempo com Charles Mingus. Este disco inclui quatro temas originais de Dolphy, um deles em colaboração com Mingus. Também apresenta três covers, "Eclipse" de Mingus, "Sketch of Melba" de Randy Weston e "Feathers" de Hale Smith.  O estilo discursivo das improvisações de Dolphy, e o violoncelo dedilhado ou com arco de Ron Carter combinam perfeitamente com os ritmos de George Duvivier no baixo e bateria de Roy Haynes.

In 1960, the free jazz being trailblazed by such jazz luminaries as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor and Horace Tapscott was being widely disparaged by both musicians and critics alike. To the visionary Eric Dolphy, however, it was simply a logical extension of the jazz tradition. Released in the middle of that musical storm and distinctly unique in and of itself, Out There, was recorded with a pianoless quartet that repurposed Ron Carter’s cello as the other melody instrument while Dolphy worked from chord patterns developed within structures that depart from ordinary 32-bar jazz and popular song forms. Dolphy’s speech-like improvisations and Carter’s bowed or plucked cello solos glide over the deft accompaniments of bassist George Duvivier and drummer Roy Haynes, all in direct service of Dolphy's unprecedented tonal explorations.
