As the label’s first release, Red Clay established the soul-funk template Creed Taylor’s CTI imprint would follow for the next decade. Joined by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Lenny White, Freddie Hubbard lays down bluesy hard-bop epiphanies, turning in his most memorable work as a leader.
In addition to standing as a career-defining affair, the 1970 effort also marks Hubbard's break from his Blue Note era and signals the fusion-minded direction he and other players would further investigate in the years to come.
On this fabulous pressing, mastered from the original tapes with utmost care, the sonic intricacies of the knotty architecture comes to fore. The results are ravishing, each note memorable. Credit ORG Music for reaching beyond the 50s and 60s and beginning to mine the rich well of the 1970s for jazz treasures for audiophile enjoyment.
Red Clay gets new life with this incredible pressing mastered from original tapes at 45rpm and pressed on two 180gram audiophile grade vinyl. This is the essential edition of this album.
"This may be Freddie Hubbard's finest moment as a leader, in that it embodies and utilizes all of his strengths as a composer, soloist, and frontman. On Red Clay, Hubbard combines hard bop's glorious blues-out past with the soulful innovations of mainstream jazz in the 1960s, and reads them through the chunky groove innovations of 1970s jazz fusion. This session places the trumpeter in the company of giants such as tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Lenny White...This is a classic, hands down." - Thom Jurek, All Music
