"On a dozen standards, Marshall's playing serves as interludes between the percussion displays of Manne; the liners give a full description of every device he hits. ... the sound is excellent for the period." — Scott Yanow, AllMusic

Revel in the sonic brilliance of Sounds Unheard Of! by Shelly Manne and Jack Marshall, a timeless jazz masterpiece available now from Analogue Productions — highest quality audiophile reissue! The Artists:

• Shelly Manne: A legendary jazz drummer known for his versatility and creativity. Manne was a prominent figure in the West Coast jazz scene and had an illustrious career that spanned various genres and collaborations.

• Jack Marshall: A talented guitarist, composer, and arranger, Marshall — born in El Dorado, Kansas —was also an influential figure in the music industry. He had a knack for blending different musical styles and was known for his work in both jazz and popular music. He attended USC in Los Angeles and, like Manne, began his professional career at the age of 18 — as a member of the MGM studio staff orchestra. His versatility as a guitarist is demonstrated throughout the album.

The Concept

Sounds Unheard Of! was conceived as an experimental project that aimed to push the boundaries of traditional jazz. The album's concept was to create a soundscape that featured unusual percussion instruments and unconventional arrangements, providing listeners with a fresh and unexpected auditory experience.

The album utilized cutting-edge recording techniques that highlighted the engineering talents at Contemporary, especially the work of Chief Engineer Howard Holzer: "I concentrated on reproducing the most detailed and intimate sounds of unamplified guitar and percussion as well as their more spectacularly obvious sounds — with our AKG C-12, Telefunken U47 & KM56, and Stevens C2 microphones, all famous for their flat-fequency response and lack of distortion."

The Music

Sounds Unheard Of! features a variety of tracks that showcase the duo's innovative approach to music. The compositions blend intricate rhythms, exotic percussion, and inventive guitar work. The album includes both original compositions and reinterpretations of standards, all executed with a distinctive flair.

This reissue by Analogue Productions, pressed at Quality Record Pressings, brings this classic album to a new generation of listeners. Pressed on 180-gram flat, silent vinyl, the recording offers an unparalled listening experience with enhanced clarity and depth. Stoughton Printing Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket.

This album showcases both unparalleled creativity and innovative arrangements. Witness a dazzling fusion of rhythms and melodies that highlights the talents of Manne and Marshall. With unique instrumentation and adventurous compositions, Sounds Unheard Of! pushes the envelope of jazz, introducing unexpected textures and harmonies that will leave you enchanted. This gem of an album has influenced countless musicians and captivated audiences for decades.

Sounds Unheard Of! remains a testament to the creativity and skill of Shelly Manne and Jack Marshall, capturing a moment in jazz history that continues to resonate with music lovers around the world.
