Charles Kynard was an American soul jazz/acid jazz organist born in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the first musician signed to Prestige Records by producer Bob Porter. While the Kansas City born, Los Angeles based organist never achieved the fame of some of his label-mates, he did cut several classics of the soul-jazz genre during his brief time there. 1970's Afro-Disiac, which The Penguin Guide to Jazz says "is surely Kynard's best album," features the legendary, highly influential Grant Green on guitar while boogaloo drum master Bernard "Pretty" Purdie keeps the grooves tight throughout especially on the smoldering, deep-pocket showcase "Sweetheart".
Flanked by a who’s-who of exceptional talent, which includes Bernard Purdie on drums, Jimmy Lewis on electric bass, Grant Green on guitar, and Houston Person on tenor saxophone, Charles Kynard turns in a soulful and sublimely understated set of purely grooving soul-jazz fare. Long out of print and never reissued in the U.S. on vinyl since its original release in 1970, Afro-Disiac just might be the musical panacea you’ve been looking for. Features the smoldering, deep-pocket Purdie showcase, “Sweetheart.”
