Originally issued on Columbia Records in 1995, Ball-Hog or Tugboat? aka The Wrestling Album is the debut solo album from bass legend Mike Watt famous for his influential work in the Minutemen, fIREHOSE and presently Iggy and the Stooges.
Watt recruited an all-star group of musicians to participate in the recording including Henry Rollins, members of Sonic Youth, Frank Black, Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl (their first appearance on a record since Cobain's death), Red Hot Chili Peppers's Flea, Wilco's Nels Cline, Mike D and Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, Curt and Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, The Lemonheads' Evan Dando and Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros' Stephen Perkins, Mark Lanegan, among many others.
The album produced three radio singles including "Big Train" (one of two songs on the record with Watt on lead vocals) plus "Against The 70's" featuring Vedder and "Piss-Bottle Man" featuring Dando. Ball-Hog Or Tug Boat? is the second biggest selling album of Watt's career after the Minutemen's iconic Double Nickels On The Dime.
This 20th Anniversary Pressing is the first since the original 1995 release, and is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. The double vinyl album comes on two 180-gram LPs, pressed at Pallas in Germany.
"For his first solo album, Mike Watt assembled a different band for each track, creating a veritable who's who of post-punk and alternative rock - Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Frank Black, Evan Dando, Dave Pirner, Henry Rollins, Flea, Lee Ranaldo, Mike D, and Pat Smear all appear, among others. Predictably, the sound is somewhat schizophrenic, but no more so than the average Minutemen album. Ball-Hog or Tugboat? is more polished than anything the Minutemen released, yet looser than fIREHOSE, filled with jazz-inflected breaks and sheer sonic freakouts, but dominated by a surprisingly large number of pop songs. On the power pop rush of "Piss-Bottle Man," Dando sings with more emotion than on most Lemonheads records, and "Chinese Fire Drill" shows an effective folky side to Watt's music. And Watt's own vocals on "Big Train" are as big-hearted, sly, and funny as the album itself." - Thomas Erlewine, All Music
