During the two-year run of their Tough Tenors quintet, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis (a Prestige artist) and Johnny Griffin (under contract to Riverside/Jazzland) satisfied their contractual obligations by recording five albums for each label. 1961's Tenor Scene was the pair’s first for Prestige, and the first of a four-album series taped over the course of an extremely productive evening at the legendary Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem.
The classic date, also known as The Breakfast Show in an earlier reissue, offers the rhythm section of Ben Riley (drums), Larry Gale (bass) and Junior Mance (piano) ample opportunity to showcase on cuts like "Woody 'N You," "Bingo Domingo" and "Light and Lovely." However, it's the leaders who truly shine here, complimenting one another's musical intensity to great effect, particularly on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" where the set reaches its absolute boiling point!
