Winner of the Swing Journal Grand Prix Award and Jazz Album of the Year from DownBeat Magazine upon its 1971 release, the self-titled debut from jazz fusion supergroup Weather Report - led by pianist/keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter - finds the two artists fresh off stints with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet and the Miles Davis Quintet.

In fact Zawinul and Shorter were both featured on Davis' seminal releases In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew and the visionary sounds of those records is further explored here. With bassist Miroslav Vitous, drummer Alphonse Mouzon, and percussionist Airto Moreira also in tow, the quintet produces a thoughtful and adventurous 8-song set that stands as one of the best debuts of any group in any genre.

Weather Report is getting new life with this incredible pressing from ORG. Mastered from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman at 45rpm, and pressed on two 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas in Germany, this is the essential edition of this groundbreaking LP.

“The music of Weather Report is music beyond category. All I can add to what has been said by the men who made it is that it seems to me music unlike any other I’ve heard, music that is very contemporary but also very warm, very human, and very beautiful...The forecast, if there is justice, must be clear skies and sunny days for these four creative men and their associates.” - Dan Morgenstern, Down Beat (May 1971)
