Reunion of three of the most talented contemporary jazz musicians, all of them experienced with some of the most well known stars of the last decades.
Jamie Saft is one the the new names of the New York avant garde scene. He was one of the stars of Masada Marathon, leaded by John Zorn, that we had the luck to see exclusively in the 2013 Heineken Jazz Festival. Saft was in Eectric Masada and The Dreamers, two of the bands that played on that successful evening. He also leads the New Zion Trio. He has shown his skills as an instrumentalist and as a producer in his collaborations with Beastie Boys, The B-52’s, Laurie Anderson, Antony and The Johnsons and others.
Steve Swallow is a key figure of jazz from the 60s, when he worked in the orchestras led by Benny Goodman, Clark Terry, Art Farmer and Stan Getz. In 1978 he joined the Carla Bley band, and is still a part today. Two years ago, he came to San Sebastián leading The Swallow Quintet, with Carla Bley on piano. In addition, Swallow played, equally, with very great names of modern jazz, such as Gary Burton, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Paul Motian, Chick Corea and Lee Konitz. He is consistently voted as best electric bassist in the survey of the prestigious DownBeat magazine poll since 1985.
Bobby Previte is a regular of the jazz scene in New York. His work explores the links between written and improvised music and has therefore earned this year’s coveted Greenfield Award. The New Yorker has said of his projects: “Previte speaks in visionary tongues.” He has collaborated with great masters of different artistic disciplines, such as singer Tom Waits, film director Robert Altman and composer John Adams.
While Jamie Saft has been a significant presence on previous RareNoise recordings by Slobber Pup, Plymouth and Metallic Taste of Blood, the renegade keyboardist and essential Downtown improviser steps into a dramatically different role on The New Standard. A collaborative trio outing featuring the dream rhythm tandem of drummer Bobby Previte and bassist Steve Swallow, both prolific composers and venerable bandleaders in their own right, it showcases Saft alternating between piano and organ and making thoughtful, melodic contributions throughout. On ten original tracks, seven of which the keyboardist composed, Saft blends brilliantly with his esteemed elders on this remarkable RareNoise release which is released on Double Vinyl. The album is the result of a magical recording and direct mixing session in Saft's own Pottervilles Studios, masterfully setup and captured by 5 - Time Grammy winning engineer Joe Ferla, who is regarded as the fourth member of the band for this remarkably empathetic endeavour. Ferla recorded everything analog direct to two-track 1/2" tape through a Neve console. The sonic integrity of the session was then realized with a fully analog vinyl master - the 180-gram dual gatefold vinyl pressing of the album will never have seen ANY computer interference.
