New York Tendaberry was released in 1969, Laura Nyro's third album that came some 18 months after Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. Many music critics consider this to be her greatest musical achievement. Nyro was in high demand as a songwriter at the time, for such groups as The 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night and Blood Sweat and Tears, while Barbra Streisand recorded her 'Time and Love'.

Experimenting with form and feeling, the innovative work of singer/songwriter Laura Nyro shares a connection with modern poetry and art and her songs have inspired musicians and music lovers for decades. Her material draws from soul, jazz, blues, R&B, and folk-rooted music, along with a modern classical influence.

By age 17, she had written the classic "And When I Die," popularized by Peter, Paul and Mary, and later Blood, Sweat and Tears. The radio airwaves of the late ‘60's and ‘70's were filled with her songs. "Wedding Bell Blues," "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Blowin' Away," "Save The Country," and "Sweet Blindness," a bouquet of compositions, all became hits for The Fifth Dimension, as did "Eli's Comin'" for Three Dog Night, and "Stoney End" for Barbra Streisand.

The summer of 1969 brought Nyro's third full-length effort New York Tendaberry, a darker affair than its acclaimed predecessor yet as passionate and soulful as anything in her catalog, emphasized by spare arrangements that often found the the artist's vocals framed by just her own piano work. Album anchor "Save the Country" was famously covered by The Fifth Dimension while Barbra Streisand went on to record "Time and Love."

"Although New York Tendaberry was nearly as strong a record as its predecessor, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, it wasn't as accessible. In large part that's because, unlike her first two albums, it didn't have three or four songs that would become instantly recognizable hits in the hands of other artists. But it was also because the mood of the record was considerably darker and the production quite a bit starker. It was hardly a gloomy affair, but the emphasis was on soulful laments and arrangements that often featured, in part or whole, nothing but her voice and piano. Without at all sounding blatantly derived from gospel, it often sounded very much in the spirit of gospel in its fervid passion, though using melodies from a wide pop/blues-soul canvas and addressing concerns far more secular and personal. There were crafty, dramatic punctuations of orchestration, yet these were far more subdued than they had been on the more jubilant Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. "Save the Country" (along with the upbeat section of "Time and Love") is really the only song here that has the immediate uplifting impact of her most famous early tunes, and even that track could have benefited from a less-bare setting. It's a rewarding album, but one that takes some effort to fully appreciate." - Richie Unterberger, All Music
